Tweets -; The morning's weather was much better than could have been expected based on the weather forecast. It was warm, not too windy after all, and not very rainy. A minority of the time we had drizzle or mizzle. Lots of the morning was dry. It was fairly birdy too, especially for mid-December. Water levels in the lake and slough are notably low for this time of year. Lack of snow in the foothills also has to be changing the types of birds we're getting (i.e. no Varied Thrush).

Highlights:
a.. Cackling Goose -; a highlight only for the low numbers. Somewhere between 20-30, so soon after counts in the thousands
b.. American Wigeon -; one male below the weir -; first since October
c.. Ring-necked Pheasant -; "Lonesome George 2" in Pea Patch -; not seen the last 3 weeks
d.. American Coot -; only one (!)
e.. Wilson's Snipe -; early mornings we're still getting 12+ snipe below the weir
f.. Mew Gull -; Good sized flock(s)
g.. Green Heron -; This one is pretty consistent -; likes the beaver lodge across from Dog Central
h.. Cooper's Hawk -; two sightings
i.. Barn Owl -; one low over East Meadow fairly late
j.. Great Horned Owl -; Matt saw one from the boardwalk or thereabouts
k.. Short-eared Owl -; one high over East Meadow about 7:15 a.m. Only our 9th ever for December
l.. Northern Shrike -; juvenile east of East Meadow
m.. Cedar Waxwing -; about 10 total. Never expected in December
n.. Pine Siskin -; flocks seen 3 times, my guess ~100 birds total
Misses today included Ring-necked Duck, Common Merganser, Bushtit, Red-breasted Nuthatch, and Lincoln's Sparrow.

For the day, 58 species, which is really excellent for this time of year, especially with a low species count for water birds.
