Admittedly, my observations are somewhat random. I see what happens to be happening when I happen to look or listen out a window, or step outside for a look-see or listen-hear, often in the wee hours. It had been several days since I last saw the barred owl(s) catching mice in our meadow in mid afternoon, or heard owlets calling from the trees. But I am hearing their breathy begging again, and yesterday afternoon saw an adult surveying and hunting. He or she had shifted hunting ground to the opposite side of the house, in the area where we have bird feeders. He made what looked like a half hearted swoop toward the small birds fleeing the suet and missed. Today though I found a few clumps of black feathers under the safflower feeder, probably belonging to a spotted towhee or possibly a black headed grosbeak.
