At the risk of beating this subject to death, Stephen's post reminded me that a few years ago we were at Sun M.t Lodge on an early-season special, for some leisurely birding in the area. At about 8:30 a.m. we were heading down the driveway and there was a Dusky Grouse on the guardrail doing a bit of a display. We stopped, and rolled down the car window, and the guy didn't budge, even while we sat there for a while listening to his soft "booming." Being lazy, we rarely see grouse, so this was a real gift!

Sun Mountain Lodge is where I found my lifer Dusky Grouse. I read the book - Birder's Guide to Washington? - which said they frequent the brush around the tennis courts. So I scoured the lower tennis courts for quite some time, completely unsuccessfully, but at the same time adding Vesper Sparrow and Brewer's Sparrow as new life birds. I was ready to give up, then thought to check Google Maps to see if the Lodge had a second tennis court. They did - and I immediately found Dusky Grouse in the green manicured lawn next to the upper tennis courts.

Several years ago a friend and I were birding in an area off Cameron Lake Loop Rd. that was partly Ponderosa and partly sagebrush. We heard a dusky grouse calling. We estimated that it was 75 to 100 feet away, and walked over to a convenient flat rock to look down the flats toward where we thought it was. We had been there a brief time and the grouse (it was a Dusky) flushed from under the rock we were standing on. Very definitely ground-based in the sagebrush.



There are other times I have seen Dusky Grouse in sagebrush.
