Here, in the Methow Valley, Dusky Grouse regularly court, nest and raise their young in shrub-steppe habitat. In the colder months, they migrate up in elevation heading to the snow-covered ponderosa pine and Douglas fir forest. The return to the shrub-steppe, often before all of the snow is melted and it is common to start to hear or see them displaying generally around the first of April. I observe this regularly on my hill covered with bitterbrush, chokecherry, serviceberry, currants, and native and non-native grasses. By now, their young are able to fly, barely.
