When I think of the foundations of the refuge and the Nisqually Delta Association, I think of Flo Brodie (and my dad's first cousin, Bud McBride) who was a founding executive and major figure head for the organization as they led the fight against a port at the delta. I remember Helen Engle and a much loved, prominent and articulate member of the Nongame Advisory Council, in the early 1980s. I really admired Helen for her ability to influence people and get incredible things done by sheer force of personality. I've always wished I had those abilities to be politically effective. Of course, she worked at it, putting on gatherings, travelling to meetings, always bringing along her smile and her laughter. She was great.

I am told that she was in large part responsible for the creation of the NIsqually National Wildlife Refuge. That is truly a remarkable legacy to leave, one I benefit from on a weekly basis.

I do not read tweeters every day so am just catching up with the last week plus and have seen no mention of Helen Engle's passing Monday March 11. She was very involved in WA Audubon and the Mountaineers among other things. She was my sister-in-law Heidi Engle's mother and my brother Rob's mother-in-law and my 2 niece's grandmother. She was an amazing woman and I consider myself honored to have been considered a friend by her. She will be missed.
