Yesterday we took a quick 1/2 day birding trip to Kittitas County starting after a lunch in Cle Elum, birding our way to Swauk Prairie, going to Ellensburg for coffee and cookies and a birding surprise and finishing with a viewing of Bighorn Sheep at Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park.

Our favorite bird of the trip was Evening Grosbeak. We saw a flock along Red Bridge Road on the way to Swauk Prairie. On the way up to Swauk Prairie we got our favorite photo of the trip, an immature Northern Shrike.

We also saw a Say's Phoebe, 2 Western Bluebirds, 3 California Quail & 5 Western Meadowlarks...all birds that get us excited.

On to the Ellensburg surprise. In a field behind McDonald's Karen saw 2 Red-tailed Hawks hunting by walking & standing in the field rather than up on a perch. This video shows their technique.

We saw one of the hawks catch a rat and fly with it to the top of a post.
