Pardon this late entry, but I think there's still time if you need waterfowl in Columbia or Garfield County. I keep telling myself to put Tweeters into my cell-phone, but apparently I'm not listening!

David and I headed for Clarkston on Sun, in hopes of reaching our 151 goal there (yes!) On the way (3/17), we stopped at the mouth of the Tucannan R in Columbia County. Upon pulling into the Fish and Wildlife parking area off Hwy 261, we immediately spotted a lone (lonely?) juvenile Trumpeter Swan (code 4), coots, mallards, RN Ducks (code 2), Am Wigeons (code 2). The ducks started moving away the minute we approached, so we quickly got in the car and drove slowly along the guardrail going back towards the Snake R. In doing so, we spotted several Redheads (code 4) and one Gadwall (also 4) We actually parked at closer to the Snake, across the road, which we could only do b/c we had the 4-wheel instead of the usual low-slung Prius, and we walked along the road for over 1/2 mile to get confirming views through the trees. (Since it was Sunday, there was very little traffic) Further out, as the Tucannon flowed into the Snake, were C Goldeneyes (code 2), Bufflehead (2) and many, many wigeons.

We had a great couple of days in the Clarkston/Asotin area, where the fields were gorgeous with snow, and the roads all good. (Well, not the Weissenfels Grade, which was rutted in mud-;don't do it!) We had the easy-to-get RL Hawk, plus Peregrine and Prairie Falcons; in Swallows Park, a Varied Thrush and Lincoln's Sparrow, and 3 Iceland (Thayer's) Gulls on the Snake near Asotin. A bonus was running into Russ Koppendrayer at dinner in Asotin!

On the way home (3/19), encouraged by Russ K's 3/18 e-bird report, we hit Willow Grove off Hasting Hill Road to Lower Granite. (The rest of the dam was windy and non-productive.) There were a pair of GW Teal (code 2) and one of H Mergs (code 4) in the quiet inlet by the restroom, but Central Ferry was the real bonanza with hundreds and hundreds, maybe thousands, of ducks-;maybe 20 Redhead pair; (Code 3) a few Canvasbacks (Code 5), scads of C Goldeneye, at least one young, male B Goldeneye (code 3) near the grain elevators, Am Wigeons galore, Mallards, N Shovelers, coots, lots of pintails, RN Ducks, and Bufflehead. Almost everything you could wish for, especially in tough Garfield Co.

It was a great couple of days for ducks and for us!!
