A late report on a Seattle Audubon trip to Grays Harbor on Friday, 3 May
2019. We started early (0600) with clear skies and 51F temperature. We did
have AMERICAN ROBIN and AMERICAN CROW at the P&R meeting spot. The initial
drive down on I-5 was somewhat bird free with AMERICAN CROW, ROCK PIGEON,
one RED-TAILED HAWK, EUROPEAN STARLING, GREAT BLUE HERON and a flyover
STELLERS' JAY.



We made a quick rest stop in West Olympia with continuing clear skies and a
single VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW. As we passed Mud Bay we picked up MALLARD.
Along SR8 we added COMMON RAVEN and another STELLER'S JAY. West of Olympia
and in the Chehalis Valley we came under clouds, and were to have them most
of the day down at the coast. We met one of our people in Aberdeen and while
waiting had a BELTED KINGFISHER fly over. Along SR-105 toward Westport we
saw EUROPEAN STARLING, BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, STELLER'S JAY, NORTHERN HARRIER
and a TURKEY VULTURE. We stopped at the house with lots of feeders on the
way into Johns River Wildlife Area. At the feeders we picked up EURASIAN
COLLARED-DOVE, COMMON RAVEN, HOUSE FINCH, HOUSE SPARROW, PURPLE FINCH, SONG
SPARROW, EVENING GROSBEAK. Down at Johns River we saw CANADA GOOSE (with
goslings), TREE SWALLOW, BARN SWALLOW, GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW, WILSON'S
WARBLER, NORTHERN FLICKER, NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLER, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET and COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT.



Because we expected this to be a busy day at Bottle Beach SP we stopped
there early and on the walk out to the Beach we saw /heard MARSH WREN,
TURKEY VULTURE, SAVANNAH SPARROW, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, SONG SPARROW,
AMERICAN ROBIN, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, and at the bridge
over the slough picked up WESTERN SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, SEMI-PALMATED
SANDPIPER, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER (nice fairly close looks - lots of sandpipers
on the Beach but flighty). Out at the Beach we saw SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER,
COMMON LOON, BALD EAGLE, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, DUNLIN (lots),
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, RED KNOT, dowitcher species (too distant to i.d.).
When we firt got out to the Beach the tide was still way out and most of the
birds were way down the Beach to the north (some sandpipers closer in). As
we walked down toward the big groups of birds at one point every bird lifted
off and flew either out over the Bay or down out of sight to the south. We
continued to work over the peeps still left, and patience payed off as many
of the larger birds came back - and that was when we could add the plovers,
dunlin, knots, and dowitchers. As we walked back out we saw NORTHERN FLICKER
and BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE. While out at the Beach we did have some sun
break thru.



We made a lunch stop at Twin Harbors S.P. and saw BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD,
TURKEY VULTURE, AMERICAN CROW, EUROPEAN STARLING, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER,
DOWNY WOODPECKER, VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW, a hummingbird species ( a lightning
pass by), and BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE. As we passed thru Grayland we saw ROCK
PIGEON, EUROPEAN STARLING, AMERICAN ROBIN, EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE and
AMERICAN CROW. At North Cove we had a good group of birds (and a Grays
Harbor Shorebird Festival trip) including CASPIAN TERN, WESTERN GULL,
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL (and hybrids), RING-BILLED GULL, SANDERLING, COMMON
LOON, RED-THROATED LOON, PELAGIC CORMORANT, BRANDT'S CORMORANT,
SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER and across the road a HAIRY WOODPECKER.



At Graveyard Spit in Tokeland we had large groups of birds: AMERICAN CROW,
BALD EAGLE, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER (many), WHIMBREL, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER,
RED KNOT (a couple in the tightly packed dowitchers), WESTERN GULL,
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, RING-BILLED GULL, SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER, BEWICK'S WREN,
AMERICAN GOLDFINCH and MOURNING DOVE. At the marina area we saw ROCK PIGEON,
WESTERN GREBE, COMMON LOON, EUROPEAN STARLING, WESTERN GULL, GLACOUS-WINGED
GULL (and hybrids), GREATER SCAUP, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, PIGEON GUILLEMOT,
WHIMBREL, MARBLED GODWIT (a single bird), WESTERN SANDPIPER, NORTHERN
SHOVELER (waay out across the bay), RED-NECKED GREBE, and GREAT BLUE HERON.



At Westport at the north end observation platform we saw ROCK PIGEON,
AMERICAN CROW, BARN SWALLOW, GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, DOUBL-CRESTED, BRANDT'S,
and PELAGIC CORMORANTs, PIGEON GUILLEMOT, RED-NECKED GREBE, COMMON LOON,
COMMON MURRE and SURF SCOTER. On the way home we added OSPREY.



It was an excellent day with good folks and lots of great birds. We finished
with 82 species for the day.
