I know many of you travel for birding, so would like to recommend a great
place to stay near Quito, Ecuador.

Joseph Brown and I just spent four days at Bellavista Lodge, in the cloud
forest of the Tandayapa Valley near Mindo. It is quite a lovely place, run
in environmentally sensitive manner, with comfortable rooms, good food, and
great birding. There are guided walks around the extensive preserve, and
several off-site excursions are available, including to the famous antpitta
site, Reserva Paz de las Aves. We especially enjoyed our time with staff
naturalist Juan Carlos Crespo, who is a terrific birder and all-around
guide. In addition to the many wonderful cloud forest birds, including
Toucan Barbet, Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan, and 21 species of hummingbirds,
we also were lucky to see a recently discovered mammal, the Olinguito, that
visits the lodge. I wish we had been able to stay longer. We were
surprised at how few other birders were there during our visit, and it would
be good if the lodge were better-known to the birding community. It's an
excellent place to visit on the way home from a trip to the Galapagos.

We have no financial interest in the lodge. I am happy to answer any
questions about our experience there.
