Dear Tweeters,
At March Point today (the tenth of September 2019) there was a flock of over 100 Western Sandpipers. There were four Sanderlings with them.
Hayton Reserve flooded with the tide earlier than I expected, so I missed what was probably a good shorebird flock there. There were Greater Yellowlegs, at least one Lesser Yellowlegs, and lots of Least and Western Sandpipers, though, along with over 120 Caspian Terns.
At the Game Range, numbers of shorebirds were low, but there was a good mix. A Stilt Sandpiper foraged on the edges of some floating logs at the south end of the main shorebird pond (along the dike past the first blind). Later, on the floating logs by the boat-launch parking lot, the usual flock of Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs included quite a few Short-billed Dowitchers, three Long-billed Dowitchers, one Pectoral Sandpiper, and a Solitary Sandpiper that flew in and joined them.
Mike Nelson arrived in time to tick the Solitary. He and I heard the Northern Waterthrush by the northeast pump station, but we did not see it.
Yours truly,
Gary Bletsch
