Yesterday, Seattle Audubon took a trip to the southern half of Whidbey
Island. Our trip started in a heavy rainstorm that continued for a ways
north and gradually dropped to a misty rain. By the time we got to Mukilteo
it was a light mist and 58F. At the ferry terminal and on the ferry crossing
we saw ROCK PIGEON, BELTED KINGFISHER, EUROPEAN STARLING, GLAUCOUS-WINGED
GULL. At Clinton and Clinton Beach Park (mist had stopped) we saw SURF
SCOTER, BELTED KINGFISHER (at least 3), GREAT BLUE HERON, GLAUCOUS-WINGED
GULL.



Our first stop was at Deer Lake under calm conditions and no rain. It was
quite slow, and several trees alongside the access road have been cleared -
we have often had good birds there, but no more. We saw CANADA GOOSE,
OSPREY, BELTED KINGFISHER, AMERICAN ROBIN, BARN SWALLOW, AMERICAN CROW, SONG
SPARROW and BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE.



We stopped at Rollinghill Road and saw NORTHERN FLICKER, COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT (an adult and several juveniles), BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE,
CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE, HOUSE FINCH, AMERICAN ROBIN, DARK-EYED JUNCO,
AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, HOUSE SPARROW, WARBLING VIREO,
TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, BEWICK'S WREN, SPOTTED TOWHEE, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH and
ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD. It was slow here to start, but quickly got quite active.



Along French Road we saw STELLER'S JAY and EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE. Along
Maxwellton Rd and in the community we saw GREAT BLUE HERON, OSPREY, PURPLE
MARTIN, NORTHERN FLICKER and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD. At Dave Mackie Park we
found GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, CALIFORNIA GULL, COMMON LOON, RED-NECKED GREBE,
HORNED GREBE, BREWER'S BLACKBIRD (adults and juveniles), WESTERN GREBE,
KILLDEER, COMMON MURRE, CANADA GOOSE, NORTHERN SHOVELER, PIGEON GUILLEMOT,
AMERICAN WIGEON, NORTHERN PINTAIL, OSPREY (at least 4), MEW GULL, GREAT BLUE
HERON, PELAGIC CORMORANT, HOUSE FINCH, BARN SWALLOW BELTED KINGFISHER, and
CASPIAN TERN.



Our next stop was at the South Whidbey School District Outdoor Classroom
where we picked up BROWN CREEPER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, SONG SPARROW,
AMERICAN ROBIN, CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE, BEWICK'S WREN, GOLDENC-CROWNED
KINGLET, HAIRY WOODPECKER, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, and RED-BREASTED
SAPSUCKER.



The Ewing Rd. pond area was completely dry, but we did see CANADA GOOSE,
OSPREY, and RED-TAILED HAWK. We went down Sunlight Beach Rd. to the eastern
end of Deer Lagoon at an extremely low tide with not may birds, but did see
GREAT BLUE HERON, KILLDEER, RING-BILLED GULL (nice pale mantle, ring on the
bill, size proper), COMMON RAVEN, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, WESTERN SANDPIPER
(both really distant, and the clouds were breaking up so heat waves were
starting). MEW GULL, MALLARD, BARN SWALLOW, AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, CASPIAN
TERN, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, OSPREY, and VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW.



At the western end of Deer Lagoon (a sign on the gate announcing a public
meeting on potential modifications that would include better access) we saw
all the birds that were missing from the eastern side. This included OSPREY
(at least 8), MALLARD, AMERICAN WIGEON, NORTHERN PINTAIL, AMERICAN WHITE
PELICAN (about 16), BELTED KINGFISHER, AMERICAN COOT, PIED-BILLED GREBE,
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER (first
seen backlit, but we worked our way around to better light angle and could
see the intricate tertials), GREATER YELLOWLEGS (at least 6), COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT, GLACOUS-WINGED GULL, RING-BILLED GULL, CALIFORNIA GULL,
SAVANNAH SPARROW, CANADA GOOSE, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, MOURNING DOVE, MARSH
WREN, and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER. We quickly drove over to Freeland for a
lunch stop at the park on Holmes Harbor and also saw MARBLED MURRELET,
AMERICAN CROW, RHINOCEROUS AUKLET, COMMON MURRE, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW,
ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD, GREAT BLUE HERON, COMMON LOON and CANADA GOOSE.



Bush Point was loaded with fisher-folk, but we did see COMMON LOON, COMMON
MURRE (many), PIGEON GUILLEMOT, RHINOCEROUS AUKLET, WESTERN GREBE,
HEERMANN'S GULL, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, PELAGIC CORMORANT, MARLBED
MURRELET, RED-TAILED HAWK and OSPREY.



Crockett Lake was mostly dead, but we did manage to find AMERICAN ROBIN,
CANADA GOOSE, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, KILLDEER, GREAT BLUE HERON, SAVANNAH
SPARROW, BALD EAGLE. At Keystone we saw all three cormorants
(DOUBLE-CRESTED, BRANDT'S, and PELAGIC), a female HARLEQUIN DUCK,
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, HEERMANN'S GULL, PIGEON GUILLEMOT and RHINOCEROUS
AUKLET.



At the ponds across from Kennedy Lagoon we saw CANADA GOOSE, GREAT BLUE
HERON, and in the lagoon COMMON LOON. We finished our trip at Libby Beach
with TURKEY VULTURE, AMERICAN CROW, ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD, WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW, WESTERN GREBE, COMMON LOON, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, RED-NECKED
GREBE, RHINOCEROUS AUKLET, PIGEON GUILLEMOT, SURF SCOTER, PACIFIC-SLOPE
FLYCATCHER, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, SPOTTED TOWHEE, AMERICAN ROBIN,
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE and BLACK-CAPPED
CHICKADEE. The birds in the strait were all very distant and took lots of
work.



The day finished with clear conditions (68F) and with 81 species for half
the island. It was an excellent day with lots of great sightings, very good
company with super eyes and hearing.
