Hi Tweeters,

It was time to check for Turkey Vulture migration at the north end of
Woodland Bottoms, Cowlitz County so I parked myself there with the
following 4 hour results:

Turkey Vulture: 253 (largest kettle was 44)
Peregrine: 3
Northern Harrier: 7
Red-tailed Hawk: 6-15 (who knows how many were really there as many would
get up, fly around, and descend again)
Osprey: 3
Cooper's Hawk: 1
Bald Eagle: 3

I was blown away by the number of migrating Vaux's Swifts at this
location. I conservatively estimated and ebirded a total of 1,352 but I
figure that for every swift I saw, 3 or 4 more got by without being counted
(you have to look away from the swifts to look at the vultures!). That
would bring the total to around 4000-5200. There were probably about 20
birds cruising by every minute. 20 x 240 minutes is 4800. Every time I
scoped a raptor, there would be at least 20 swifts flying through the field
of view.

Larry Schwitters - any decrease in the number of roosting swifts in your
area over the last several days?
