Thanks Bud for sharing this sad news. On a whim earlier last week I had
pulled out my old field notebooks from 3 months spent at the Navopatia
Field Station on the coast of southern Sonora, Mexico, while working with
Steve's Alamos Wildlands Alliance organization. I speak on behalf of many
of Professor Herman's students when I say the wildlife conservation and
field ornithology skills I learned there have stuck with me nearly ten
years later. I have no doubts his will be a lasting legacy.

Unfortunately, I must report that Steven G. Herman, retired professor of
ornithology at the Evergreen State in Olympia, has passed away this morning
after a long battle with cancer.

He will be missed by all of us whose lives he changed for the better
through his brilliance, his teachings, his love of nature and especially
his integrity.
