Yesterday a juvenile Anna's appeared on the railing of our deck in Ballard
and spent about a half hour there, almost without interruption. I guess it
was enjoying the sun-warmed wood and the reduced wind-chill in the lee of
the house. Today it was seen in the yard nearby for several hours, hawking
tiny flies at times. It's very trusting and flew quite close to us several
times, including slowly passing within a foot of my head, probably while
looking for prey.

The tip of its tongue protrudes from the beak at all times, and the upper
mandible appears shorter. Both mandibles appear pointy, so I don't think
it's broken. Is this typical?
