I have never seen so many comments and appreciations expressed for one
person on Facebook.

He influenced so many people in such positive ways.

One of my absolute favorite "Steve stories" (and there are many) took place
when the powers that be tried to fill in Bowerman Basin many years ago. As
most of you know, this site is a critical stopover point for spring migrant
shorebirds.

At a hearing, one of the proponents for filling in the basin tried to get
them to assign a monetary value to each shorebird, thinking that they could
then buy them all and then fill the basin.

This person was foolish enough to ask Dr. Herman exactly how much a Dunlin
was worth.

Steve replied " I don't know. Let's ask Boeing to build one."

Bowerman was saved by people like Steve.
