Subject: [Tweeters] eBird photo question

Good questions, Gary.

It's still possible to embed photos from external websites (e.g., Flickr)
in checklists in the way that we used to, but bird photos should always be
added directly to your checklist using the "new"/current method, as
described under Photo Upload Guidelines. Habitat photos and other non-bird
photos (nests and eggs exempted), however, should not be uploaded using the
current direct upload method because they would end up in the Macaulay
Library tagged with the name of the species they are loaded under.
Instead, it is acceptable to use the old photo embedding method to place
habitat photos under the "Checklists Comments" field.

Hope that makes sense.

Dear Tweeters,

While browsing through some recent Skagit County checklists by various
observers, I noticed one that sported a photograph of the habitat. This
photo was not placed with a bird species from the eBird checklist. It was
over on the left margin, below the site information.

I seem to remember that it was possible to include such photos at one time,
several years ago, but I think that that feature has been taken away. Under
the help menu, there is a page called "Photo Upload Guidelines," and this
page expressly disallows scenery photos.

Now I see a checklist with such a photo, but I see no information on the
eBird website telling about this feature, or how to use it. There is a hint
about this, though. It appears to be possible to include a map of one's
travel, using something called "eBird Mobile Tracks." The checklist that I
saw, however, showed just a habitat photo, not a map. Under the habitat
photo, there is a caption reading "submitted from eBird from iOS version
2.0.122." That makes me wonder whether there is some feature available to
mobile app users, which is not available to users who enter data on a
computer at home. While searching around in eBird's help menu and their
news menu, I did come upon a page that showed a habitat photo, but I can't
get back to that page--I didn't bookmark it.

Any clarification on this point would be welcomed.

Yours truly,

Gary Bletsch
