The Pentax U-series is quite good for the price of about $150. It is
compact and will fit small hands well. Good close focus and sharpness. Main
drawback is 21mm aperture which results in darker images dawn and dusk and
other poor light situations. As always, take your kids to the Audubon shop
or other vendor so they can try out the binocs. Eyes differ, thus trying
before buying is highly recommended (essential, actually, to avoid buyers
remorse), even for kids.
