Ed, you can drive from Winthrop through to Loomis by driving up Okanagan NF
Road 37 along Boulder Creek, then taking NF Road 39 through the high country
past Roger Lake, Tiffany Springs, and Corral Butte to Long Swamp. There is
no connection between Thirtymile and Long Swamp, and hasn't been for more
than 30 years. The unfortunate part about taking NF Roads 37 and 39 is that
virtually all the country between Roger Lake and Long Swamp was incinerated
in the Tripod Fire of 2006. It is depressing to drive past miles and miles
of burnt snags, and there has been relatively little regrowth so far. The
fire was pretty intense.

I spent a lot of time in this area during the Washington Breeding Bird Atlas
(1988-1994), and have visited occasionally since then. One of these days,
there will be a vibrant forest there again, but it will certainly be long
after I'm gone.

All the best,

Hi all, I haven't taken the back way from Winthrop to Loomis for almost a
decade and in looking at current maps it was looking like the old way
doesn't go through anymore. I couldn't see the connection between Thirty
Mile and Long Swamp anymore. Is there still a way?

Good Birding,

Ed
