My wife, bud and I saw a wolverine in June 2012 high in Headlight Basin
near Ingalls Peak while on a ski tour. We reported it to the Washington
Department of Fish & Wildlife (with my bud's pics), which confirmed our
sighting. The wolverine, a large male, was trapped and collared by WDFW
within a couple weeks. Two of our mountain buds saw the same male wolverine
on Sixty-Six Hundred Ridge a month later. WDFW said it was the southernmost
confirmed wolverine sighting in 80 years. The existence of a wolverine
colony in the area was confirmed in 2015.
There's no confusing a fisher with a wolverine. A colloquial term for
wolverine is "skunk bear," an apt description.
