Thursday it was overcast, with light sprinkles for about 10 minutes, 62-72° F, south breeze at 0-3 knots at the JBLM Eagles Pride Golf Course. The six of us (masked up and socially distancing) strolled the usual route. Highlights included the following:
Cooper's Hawk being harassed by a multitude of Barn Swallows
8 Wood Ducks - 3 at the 12th hole pond and 5 at Hodge Lake (photo of eclipse-plumage male on eBird)
Pied-billed Grebe with at least two small young underwing at Hodge Lake (usual breeding area) (photo on eBird)
1 Belted Kingfisher (male) that we first saw at the 12th hole pond, and then at Hodge Lake
3 Vaux's Swifts
2 House Wrens - late for this area
18 Red Crossbills - likely undercounted - they seemed to be in the Douglas-firs in many areas of the golf course
35 Pine Siskins - as above as noted with the crossbills
We also had (close-in observations) of 5 black-tailed deer and at least 5 Douglas squirrels.
The JBLM Eagles Pride GC birders meet the third Thursday of each month at 8:00AM. Starting point is Bldg # 1514, Driving Range Tee, Eagles Pride Golf Course, I-5 Exit 116, Mounts Road Exit. Upcoming walks include the following:
