Seems like everyday I learn of another threat to birds, animals, and the environment about which I was ignorant. Today I learned that toilet paper is traditionally made from virgin wood pulp from boreal forests. According to Bird Watcher's Digest Vol.43 No. 1: "In fact, humans flush the equivalent of 270,000 trees down the toilet every day. That's 270,000 fewer trees for our precious northern-nesting birds to call home." In addition to the loss of trees the production of TP uses toxic chemicals. Avoiding TP packaged in plastic is also urged. There is the alternative of using TP made from recycled paper or now of using toilet paper made from bamboo. Bird Watcher's Digest gives resources for purchase options and background.

Thank you all for the other information I learn from this newsgroup almost daily.
