I grew up in Northern Germany and recall walking out of our house in the
morning and hearing a (Eurasian) Curlew. Now curlews are birds of meadows,
moors and marshes, but not of a backyard with fruit trees! It turned out to
be a European Starling sitting in front of its nest box in our cherry tree,
flailing its wings and doing a number of imitations. Another good one, was
the call of the Golden Oriole.
