Subject: [Tweeters] OT: Dark Squirrel

I spent most of the first 60 years of my life in the East, 50+ in northern
Virginia. by body shape, tail shape, ears & face, I would say Eastern Grey
Squirrel. and they often come in a black phase, I had a family of the
black phase living in my yard for most of a decade. But the bronze sheen
on the body and face are something I've never seen in the black phase. the
normal grey phase usually has some orangish tones in the face and along the
sides where this squirrel shows the bronze sheen, but this is more
pronounced than I've ever seen. [see photos at

having said all that, my guess is that this is a black phase Eastern Grey
Squirrel, but with some unusual genetics leading to some unusual pelage.
maybe someone has experience with hybrids with some other species of
squirrel ...
