For some reason, I never got the original message. Strange. I've never seen a squirrel like this one. Still, except for the black, the other coloration seems close to Douglas Squirrel, perhaps Fox Squirrel. Any hints on whether the size was closer to that of Douglas Squirrel or more like an Eastern Gray Squirrel.

I spent most of the first 60 years of my life in the East, 50+ in northern Virginia. by body shape, tail shape, ears & face, I would say Eastern Grey Squirrel. and they often come in a black phase, I had a family of the black phase living in my yard for most of a decade. But the bronze sheen on the body and face are something I've never seen in the black phase. the normal grey phase usually has some orangish tones in the face and along the sides where this squirrel shows the bronze sheen, but this is more pronounced than I've ever seen. [see photos at <https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffnt&q=eastern+grey+squirrel&iax=images&ia=images&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.coniferousforest.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2019%2F08%2FEastern-Gray-Squirrel-Picture.jpg> https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffnt&q=eastern+grey+squirrel&iax=images&ia=images&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.coniferousforest.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2019%2F08%2FEastern-Gray-Squirrel-Picture.jpg] having said all that, my guess is that this is a black phase Eastern Grey Squirrel, but with some unusual genetics leading to some unusual pelage. maybe someone has experience with hybrids with some other species of squirrel ...

I would appreciate it if someone could ID the dark squirrel in the following photo.

It hangs around a yard in Carnation that has bird feeders.

Thank you.
