Hello All,
Last week saw the end of the 120th National Audubon Christmas Bird Count season and if you are anything like me, you too want it to be December 15th, 2020 so we can do this whole thing over again. This year I had the privilege of helping at 3 different CBCs and had a lot of fun at all of them.
I am writing this to the birders of Washington to ask for help and input on my wanting to start a CBC in south Thurston County area. Many of you may know that three years ago I started the first-ever CBC in Lewis County and thanks to the wonderful conduction of the one and only Dave Hayden it had another wonderfully successful year (minus the 3 inches of rain that fell on count day).
This new count, the Scatter Creek CBC, would encompass most of the remaining South Sound Prairie land that has been protected as of now. Locations such as Scatter Creek Wildlife Recreation Area, Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve, Glacial Heritage Preserve, and West Rocky Prairie. Each of these sites contains and manages a bulk of the protected lands that so many species rely on in the South Sound.
Lucky for us the fun does not stop there. This new circle would also include a large portion of the Capitol State Forest, Millersylvania State Park, Black Lake, the Black River Habitat Management Area, and the Black River Unit of the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. As well as the communities of Rochester, Grand Mound, South Tumwater, Littlerock, Maytown, and the outskirts of Tenino.
If any of you are potentially interested in adding another CBC to your list of usual attendances please let me know. The count cannot happen without people like you who are willing to volunteer there time to help in one of the most important citizen science projects ever. I have put a lot of thought into this count and feel like it could be a very fun and productive count.
Please shoot me an email if this is something that interests you, by now means does your interest require your attendance just that you think that this count is worthwhile and could potentially see yourself supporting it in the future.
Thanks all!
