A very nice day between several soggy and/or snowy days and a forecast of more rain. Chilly at first-;low 30s-;and breezy, adding to the chill, but the birds were active and a good variety was on hand. Surprisingly, dipped on raptors, though I heard a very good eagle imitation from the starlings.
Scaup - the flock of Greater Scaup continues to grow; well over a hundred now, but just a handful of Lesser
Red-breasted Merganser - a single male continues
Red-necked Grebe - one was at the north shore
American Coot - a single bird continues to mix with the other waterfowl in Promontory Pond
Killdeer - nearly 20 loafing together on the north shore
Wilson's Snipe - meadows, early; one was flushed up by a hunting Barn Owl
Barn Owl - one in the CC box, another hunting the meadows, another roosting
Barred Owl - continues, north end
Marsh Wren - a showy bird was in the wetlands; very curious about my pishing
Hermit Thrush - by the Education Pavilion; has been pretty regular in this general area all year
Purple Finch - 3 birds flew into a tree next to where I was standing along the lake shore
Yellow-rumped Warbler - a few; 2 Myrtles were foraging in the cobble on the beach; a minute later, a flock of a dozen American Goldfinch joined them
For the day, 56 species.
