Vicki, I know you're looking for a guide book, and I don't have a
suggestion for more recent publications since I moved from Texas 18 years
ago. The lower Rio Grande Valley (RGV), South Padre Island (SPI), and the
upper Texas coast were my spring and fall birding stomping grounds in the
80s and 90s. My partner and I were able to return to bird the RGV and SPI
almost 9 springs ago and stayed at the most wonderful B&B that caters to
birders: Alamo Inn B&B, Alamo, TX <https://alamoinnbnb.com/>. The town of
Alamo is just east of downtown McAllen and an easy drive to all the birding
hot spots. Innkeeper Keith Hackland is a gracious host and knowledgeable
birder. During our 5-day stay he monitored on a daily basis the areas for
rarities as well as birds on our target list. He generously shared his
expertise with us and bent over backwards to make our trip a success.
Domestic geese and ducks roamed the Inn's grounds, and Lesser Nighthawks
nested on the roof of our one-bedroom apartment. I'd give the Alamo Inn 5
stars for convenient location, excellent service, value, and of course, the
birds!

Hope this helps, and happy birding,
Diane Birsner

A friend and I are thinking of spending a week in this area, but I cannot
make plans as I don't have a clue what guide includes this area. Theres
one on Rio Grande, and several others, so which includes that area?Thank
you for your help in this matter.Vicki BiltzBuckley, WA 98321
