I recommend Birds of Puget Sound for all beginning birders regardless of age.  It is easy to carry in the field and contains only the birds one is most likely to see on a local field trip. Similar guides are available for other areas in the region, such as the Willamette Valley.  Keep the small regional guides in the car and save the big, heavy national guides for the book shelf at home.
