Subject: [Tweeters] where North American birds winter (off topic, mostly)

Hi, folks,

I spent summer of 2018 working on bird surveys in Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in Mexico. While there, I got to see early returning birds like Black-and-white Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler, Orchard Oriole, Purple Martin, and of course the cool breeders. Like Vaux's Swifts (!). The manager of the project sent me notice that Mexico is planning to cut funding of its environmental agency, CONANP, by 75%, basically removing management, monitoring, and law enforcement from the country's preserves, like Calakmul, leaving the door open for illegal deforestation and poaching. If you've birded the Yucatan, you've probably been to Calakmul, getting your Ocellated Turkey and Mayan pyramid fix. Of course, this affects reserves all over Mexico. Should you feel inclined to encourage continued support, here's the form letter with the link.

P. S., as your reward for reading this far, I pass on the limited information that I was asked to identify a recording of a Yellow-breasted Chat made at an undisclosed wetland in King County this spring, where it was/has been for some weeks. No, I do not know the location.
