Tweets,
David and I made a 2 night trip to N Spokane in order to bird Pend Oreille County. We eventually picked up the birds we needed for our 151 goal, noting an especially nice fence-line near the Kalispel Rest Stop on Hwy 20 that was arrayed with W Meadowlark, W Snipe, and 3 or 4 Bobolinks, among other species. We attempted to get to Bunchgrass Meadows, but were met with a couple of feet of snow across Hardy Creek Rd at about Mile 9, and then were also thwarted on Salmo Pass with snow and a fallen tree about 1/2 mi before the top! No Boreal Chickadees, but lots of warblers and thrushes on the way up and the Lincoln's and Fox Sparrow (Slate-colored) we needed . Guess we should have checked with local expert Terry Little before heading up there!

On the way home late this afternoon, though, I checked the daily eBird report and noted a Code 4 Clark's Grebe at Wanapum SP, reported by Deborah Essman at 8:30 a.m. It would be foolish to resist, and when we pulled in at the Wanapum boat ramp, we could see a grebe with our naked eyes, close to the dock. Scope and bin views showed it to be the Clark's, with a Western a hundred or so feet off for nice comparison. There were no other waterfowl on the water, but several Bank Swallows with a scan revealing the colony in the sand bank to the south. A good end to a couple of days in beautiful PO County!
