Just brought in a hummingbird feed to clean and refill when I heard a mountain quail calling south of my place out here in beautiful Tahuya. Yesterday three were chasing each other out of the yard while two others continued feeding. This time of year you can't tell the females from last year's kids.

A week ago Sunday the first Band-Tailed Pigeon of the season was at my place. By Saturday there were three. It's always interesting to see how many come back from the northwestern part of California where this flock over-winters. Last year I was worried the fires had depleted the numbers but over 40 made the return trip.

The Indian Plum is coming into bloom so those Rufous Hummers seen in southern WA this past week will be up here soon I imagine.

But I'm heading down to Arizona for a week for family, birding and rock-hunting fun. But those wanting to listen for mountain quail, now is the time to visit the north Mason County area. Pick a morning either clear or overcast but no rain for best conditions. Early mornings are best.
