Hi Tweeters & Inland NW Birders -

Time for the first bi-monthly update of the 2020 County Year list Project. We've received updates from most [but not all] counties with details through the end of February. County compilers, especially for the under-birded counties, would appreciate receiving reports of any birds seen in their counties.

As of the end of February, 250 species had been reported across the state, 216 in Western WA and 194 in Eastern WA.

The state total [250] is 3 lower than the end-feb totals in 2019, 7 higher than 2018.

The Western WA total [216] was 10 lower than than last year, and 4 higher than 2018. Last year's early total was abnormally high, so this represents more of a 'normal' level, perhaps.

The Eastern WA total [194] this year was 3 higher than last year, and 2 lower than 2018.

When it comes to likely winter rarities, we've got the Siberian Accentor to be excited by, but not too much else. The last Emperor Goose & Eider sightings came in just before 2020, and the Tufted Duck in Everett appeared after this period closed. Gulls, sparrows and the rest were solid but contained no winter rarities to speak of. We also don't have the Grays Harbor Co totals to perhaps add in a few coastal birds, but the lack of pelagics so far this year probably means the total hasn't missed many sighings.

If you'd like to take a look at where things stand, the list and many other interesting files are at the Washington Birder website:

Thanks to all the compilers and all those pitching in to begin to sketch a picture of another year's birds in WA.
