Outfits like Ben Meadows and Forestry Suppliers sell field cruiser vests that should work well for birders. The standard models have good-sized pockets (with flaps secured by Velcro), interior sleeves or pockets, a back "pocket" secured with a zipper that is large enough for a clipboard (or any field guide) to easily slide in, and also a back-side pouch with flap which I never used. The front has several pouches that I always used for pens, compass and other smaller items. Strategically placed grommets allow the user to secure items that may fall out (e.g., compass, GPS). I used one of these vests for years while conducting bird surveys in forests. Never lost anything from a pocket. The last time I checked the color options were tan or green. Be careful about sizing, as the vest will be worn over other clothing in most cases. Not sure what the pricing is like these days. There might be other companies that sell supplies for outdoor workers and it should not take much time online to identify all the potential sources for cruiser vests or the equivalent.
