Yesterday I went out to the Johnson-DeBay Swan Reserve outside of Mt.
Vernon to check it out as I help steward this Wildlife Area. What I found
was a shock: inside the Reserve boundary (meaning across the causeway and
past the gate to the inner parking lot was a parked truck and a man out
retriever training his 2 chocolate labradors. He had set up equipment and
was inside the fence to the birding trail and bird nesting area. When I
talked with him he was not going to stop, was not friendly, and continued
to train his dog, including the use of blank cartridges to mimic the sound
of a gun. He was parked within reading distance of the signs that said he
could not do what he was doing. I took photos and reported him to the
Skagit Wildlife Area manager and to WDFW enforcement.
If anyone sees this kind of activity on the JDSR or other Game Reserve
areas, please use the resources below to report the activity. Our wildlife
and their habitat needs protection and these areas are for all of us. Abuse
including trash, vandalism and other things needs to stopped (realistically
I know we can only slow it down).

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED: When you are out birding and see something that is
illegal, please take the time to take photos, note the time, note any other
details and then report it to the appropriate authority. For WDFW this can
be using several methods: There are multiple ways to report a poaching
violation:

- *Call* 911 to report poaching in progress, a dangerous wildlife
complaint, or an emergency.
- *Call* 877-933-9847 for non-emergency poaching/violation reports.
- Send an *email* to reportpoaching at dfw.wa.gov.
- Send a *text tip* to 847411 (TIP411) by entering WDFWTIP, followed by
a space, and then entering your report.
- Use the *online reporting form* at
https://wdfw.wa.gov/about/enforcement/report#

If you see something happening at JDSR you can also let me know off the
list.

Thanks for being more eyes out there. If we do not help protect our
important bird habitats, who will?
