Hello Tweeters,

I am the project coordinator for an ongoing community science project <http://depts.washington.edu/sefsqel/effects-of-social-distancing-on-backyard-birds/> run by the UW Quantitative Ecology Lab to learn more about how social distancing may impact birds in the Pacific Northwest. I believe word of this project has already been circulated on this list_serv, but I've received several inquiries lately about whether or not it's too late to sign up, so I wanted to let folks know that it is not! You are welcome and encouraged to sign up <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScBuNdDokJ4KuR1OaXBTodzbGa60eoc7ZTZnHHYYcayD4ihwg/viewform?usp=sf_link> any time.

We are asking volunteers to conduct weekly ten-minute stationary point counts from their backyards or local green spaces from now through the end of June and again next spring. The data collected this year will allow us to establish a baseline for what birds were seen in urban and suburban habitat in the PNW this (unusual) spring and link species presence to various components of the urban environment. We hope to compare 2020 data to 2021 data to learn more about how social distancing influenced bird communities.

If you have any questions, you can email our lab at sefsqel at uw.edu <mailto:sefsqel at uw.edu>. If you would like to share what you think may be an unusual bird observation this spring, we encourage you to do so using this form <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfUhHk6eIn-Bjj9B39oa60Ipw6ewS5mYej2hL_KoEF-n-kdsg/viewform?usp=sf_link>, whether or not you're interested in volunteering.

Thank you, and happy birding!

Best,
Olivia
