Yesterday while driving back from Mt. Vernon, about MP 214 two large birds,
a crow and as it turned out an adult bald eagle were having an aerial
tussle over head, then the eagle swooped down and landed on the inside lane
of the freeway. Fortunately all of us in cars (all lanes) saw this coming
and came to a complete stop for a second or two, the eagle flew off with
its prize dangling from talons. All this just a few feet from my car.
Then, about 3 minutes later a bird comes flying across the freeway
lanes at windshield height going east to west. By its wing color, wing
beat, size and odd shape, it was a barn owl! This time, it was only
cruising through.
When I got home, another treat awaited: the first of the season for
me: evening grosbeak male sitting atop my feeder. The more than 14
band-tailed pigeon were waiting in the trees to descend on the feeder.
Nice birding and no binoculars needed.
