Dear Tweeters,
Today, the twenty-second of May, I was surprised to see a Black Phoebe at Northern State Recreation Area, on Sedro-Woolley's eastern outskirts. I was checking a white plastic pipe that sticks out of the banks of Hansen Creek, where Rough-winged Swallows used to breed, when I heard the phoebe calling. It was flycatching from various logs that are in the creek there, and gave me some close views. This was at the bright reddish-orange "Farmstead Bridge," which is close to the gate that allows pedestrians to walk into the Swift Center--off-limits to the general public until very recently.
Maybe this individual will find a mate--the site looks perfect for a phoebe. As of now, I think the Game Range on Fir Island is the only reliable place in Skagit County for this species, which is expanding its range.
Yours truly,
Gary Bletsch
