We did a day trip to Umtanum Creek and the Wenas/Umtanum Roads yesterday. Saw all the expected birds, and were surprised by a pair of White tailed Kites flying close and low over the road, headed N to S roughly. We got good looks and there is no doubt about the identification, no photos though.
On our way back headed W on I-90 from Ellensburg we saw another White tailed Kite flying parallel to the road, hunting through hayfields.
We weren't aware of their presence in these areas; indeed, it was a life bird for me (husband previously saw one in California at the shore).
