Hello everyone,

these days, it seems that we know mostly everything there is to know about
large, iconic, widespread species, but a recent large-scale DNA study has
provided us all with a surprise: A new subspecies of the red-tailed black
cockatoo has been identified, and it was hiding in plain sight! This piece
describes the research that led to this discovery. (Also keep in mind this
finding may add a tick to your birdwatching lists)

I hope this piece is interesting and informative, and of course, I also
hope that you share it widely with fellow "birdie" friends and colleagues,
on social media and on twitter.

(and, as an aside, today is world parrot day, so this is kinda neat.)

as always, thank you for reading.
