In December 1973, we headed to Seattle for Christmas from Portsmouth, VA. We'd seen photos in the Post-Intelligencer of Snowy Owls perched on buildings in the downtown area. On a trip up to Guemes Island, we saw at least 9 Snowy Owls on the Skagit flats. I have several photos buried somewhere in old boxes. My first Snowy Owls!

My first Snowy was also at Sand Point Naval Air Station on January 4, 1974. There were 3 Snowies and at least two Short Eared Owls and a Snow Bunting that day. On January 10 that year there was a Snowy Owl and a Short Eared Owl at the Montlake Fill. Short Eared Owls were regular at Sand Point in the winter when it was an airfield.

From another old-timer!
My first Snowy Owl EVER was on the Christmas Bird Count in 1974 with Phil Mattocks and John Wingfield. The bird was sitting on the tundra ... er.r.r.r... tarmac on the runway (yes, there was one) at the Sand Point Naval Air Station, what is now Magnuson Park.

Looked right at home!

Happy Thanksgiving, Tweeters!
