Subject: [Tweeters] two one-and-a-half CBC history questions

Can anyone tell me when the name "Christmas Bird Count" was first formally
used? Were any other names used?

Can anyone tell me when the CBC was no longer held only on December 25th?
If it changed date ranges several times, when and to what date ranges?

I'd greatly appreciate citation(s).

Yesterday I learned that what's now called the "Christmas Bird Count"
originated in 1900 as a "Christmas Bird-Census", following a proposal by
Frank Chapman to start an alternative to traditional Christmas Day "side
hunt" competitions.

I also found that the current range of dates for CBC counts is from
December 14th through January 5th, set locally.

On this gorgeous chilly day, I'm already looking forward to the days
becoming longer again so I can spend more time enjoying nature, and
grateful I can read about traditions when I'm inside.

Thank you,
