Yet another comment on this relationship, for hummingbird species
whose breeding habitat is in mountain areas or higher elevations,
e.g. Calliope in our region, these sapsucker workings are very
useful. Should a spring migrant arrive perhaps too early, with
snow on the ground and no nectaring plants available sapsuckers
provide a useful survival mechanism with sap & insects, thus
extending their early existence. Of course this occurs at low
elevations too and probably also with Rufous Hummingbird.
Of course Anna's has a wide range of feeding sites.
