Dear Tweeters,
This afternoon, the twenty-ninth of October, two adult Bald Eagles tried to kill a Great Egret. This was high in the sky, 100 to 150 meters above a large agricultural field. I was watching from the southeast end of the Padilla Bay Trail in Skagit County, looking eastwards. The birds were just south of SR20. Over at least five minutes, the two eagles kept flying at the egret. They were able to catch up to it each time, but the egret was adept at dropping and dodging. I believe there were five to seven attempts during this time. After several attacks, all of which failed, the egret would fly directly toward the eagles, which by that time would be gathering for the next chase. Eventually, after a final and intense attack from the eagles, the egret managed to plummet into a thick coniferous forest, which is on the north side of the west end of Ovenell Road, near the waste transfer station. I managed to take only one miserable photo of this event, as distant as it was.
This was almost certainly the same Great Egret as the one reported earlier today by Dr. Eisner.
Yours truly,
Gary Bletsch
