I went on a nonsensically long kayak paddle yesterday through the San
Juans.

(This took from 8 AM to 1 AM)

The highlight was seeing about 10 Marbled Murrelets south of Lopez between
Castle Island and Swirl Island, and another 13 in the channel east of
Waldron Island. South of Lopez almost all were in pairs, and as far as I
could tell almost all were adults in basic plumage, except one that was
still quite brown. Up north, I had pairs and trios. I guessed the later
were mates with their fledgling, and in one case I could clearly see that
one was juvenile plumage while two were basic.

Also had about ten Harlequin Ducks around Turn Island, which seems to be a
pretty reliable spot for them.

Numbers of Rhinoceros Auklets were still disappointing: only a couple of
dozen birds. Also only a handful of Pigeon Guillemots.
