Hello Tweeters,

After his visit to Wylie Slough on September 4, Gary Bletsch
wrote noted on Tweeters that he had seen, among other nice birds, a
Sharp-tailed Sandpiper. Yesterday was a pleasant day, so we headed up to
Wylie to see if we could find the Sharp-tailed Sandpiper. Quite a few other
people had seen Gary's post too, so by about 6 pm, there were perhaps a
dozen people standing on the dike out from the bird blind looking into the
slough to the east. We were all being careful to wear masks and maintain
social distance. It took forever for very much water to seep into the
slough, so we watched as the light quietly drained from the sky. First
yellowlegs and a Killdeer came in, then, a dowitcher, which we think was
really a Short-billed Dowitcher. Then we found a quartet of Wilson's Snipe
foraging with ducks. We had a quick visit from Semipalmated Sandpipers and
Western Sandpipers. Finally, a few Pectoral Sandpipers flew in. Several
raptors tried to get a meal off these birds as we watched, including a very
aggressive Peregrine Falcon. It was a beautiful experience to observe all
this, but the STPS (yes, that's the code) didn't show. At least not while
we were there.

Despite the no show, we took lots of pictures. In this case
Bill's were the best. I have put his best shots on Flickr. They are just
at the beginning of my photostream. If you look, when you get to the
Buff-breasted Sandpipers from last week, you have exhausted our Wylie Slough
photos.
