Dear Tweeters,
On the 14th of June, 1997, several Vaux's Swifts were doing interesting at the Hardy Burn, in the extreme eastern part of Skagit County. I did not take detailed notes, but I remember that a friend or two and I observed the swifts as they repeatedly dove down and appeared to snatch at little twigs of some charred snags there. We could not tell if the swifts were trying to catch insects off those twigs, or perhaps actually grab bits of the twigs, but our best guess was that the birds were collecting nesting material. This is presumably a different behaviour from that described in the recent posts to Tweeters.
Yours truly,
Gary Bletsch
