This afternoon I saw what appeared to be a female or juvenile GARGANEY at the County Line Ponds on SR-26.
It was hanging out with two Green-winged Teal in the north pond. The bird appeared to be slightly bigger than the GWTE, maybe an inch longer.
The face was strongly patterned, with a dark eye line, a pale stripe becoming close to white at the base of the bill, and a lower dark stripe. The pattern was the same on both sides of the face, and showed from any angle.
I don't think I was imagining this, but the eye appeared somewhat red. I have no idea if that is a field mark.
Unfortunately, I didn't have my phone in my pocket, so I got no photos.
I hope someone else can spot this bird.
