Today is Plover Appreciation Day. I haven't been out to see any today, but there are definitely some Killdeer out there. To see what started it, I recommend the video, "Plight of the Hoodie," at

. The same issues affect other beach nesting birds, like Least Terns, Piping Plovers, and our Snowy Plovers. It's actually a little rosy. It doesn't mention chicks run over by vehicles, which is common, as chicks shelter in tire ruts, or feral cats and introduced foxes. It's worth watching for the song of the Australian Magpie.
