Tweeters,
The smog was fairly thick at the JBLM Eagles Pride Golf Course when the seven of us started (56-67° F, no wind), and it proceeded to thicken further for a couple of hours, with the sky finally brightening a bit by 1100. Although we had 33 species, the numbers of some species were particularly noteworthy for this site:
46 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES - family parties seemed to be almost everywhere we went through the forested areas
42 RED CROSSBILLS - Many groups of this species were scattered around the golf course We did hear swallows (probably Barn Swallows) overhead near the driving range, but the smog was so thick we could neither positively ID them nor even attempt a count.
A lone GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was the first for the season; the lone WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was the last bird seen today: both seemed to be an auspicious beginning to Autumn's arrival.
The JBLM Eagles Pride GC birders meet the third Thursday of each month at 8:00AM. Starting point is Bldg # 1514, Driving Range Tee, Eagles Pride Golf Course, I-5 Exit 116, Mounts Road Exit. Upcoming walks include the following:
* October 15
* November 19
* December 17
Anyone is welcome to join us! (Currently, wear a mask and maintain social distancing.)
