Although it doesn't correspond to your description, I saw my first Rock Sandpiper there fifty years ago…

Subject: [Tweeters] Dune Peninsula Park Shorebird ID

Has anybody birded at the Dune Peninsula Park at Point Ruston in Tacoma lately? We were there yesterday afternoon (Saturday 10/16) and saw a shorebird on the rocks in the area of the line of rocks just off the shoreline. It is frequented by harbor seals and even at high tide, I counted at least twenty of them yesterday.
The shorebird has a brownish back and the stripes on the chest have a distinct line - somewhat like a Pectoral Sandpiper. The wings are long and bill and legs are dark or black. The tip of the bill has a slight downward turn. There is a light stripe through the eye. Maybe a Baird's - or White-rumped Sandpiper? It does not appear to be a Dunlin and seems to be slightly larger. It is a single bird and I believe it is the same bird I saw there last winter.
We did not find any longspurs.
